Hi all--
Here we are in Oregon--after a delightful 4 days with Maggie and Jim. We have been treated like royalty! We have played with horses, cows, dogs, cats, and of course, Maggie and Jim! Drew even came up for a day and it was great to see him. It's quite a menagerie here and I am loving it. If only they would get one or two alpacas, I would be very happy living the farm life vicariously through them!
We have had some wonderful walks in the Oregon woods, a great "shake-down" bike ride yesterday, and a little horseback riding thrown in for kicks (actually, Prince literally kicked with David riding bareback!). Anyway, although we are tempted to just stay and enjoy Maggie and Jim's hospitality for 10 weeks, we decided to do the bike ride we planned.
We spent some time shopping in Corvallis, a bicycling mecca--and found that they really DON'T make waterproof shoe covers, so we decided to try and make them ourselves. We found a fantastic outdoor gear fabric shop in Corvallis (The Rain Shed), and David is now sporting new booties. Check them out in the attached pictures! We'll also post some scenes from our home away from home in Oregon, and the next time you see a post, it will be from the road!
We plan to start tomorrow (Wednesday)--from Lincoln City on the coast. We'll hopefully ride to Larry Daane's house in Newberg. The next day we plan to cross over into Washington State and ride up the Columbia River on that side. This will avoid some of the Cascade Mountain Range and should be beautiful! I think it will take 3 or 4 days to make the trek along the river, and then we'll head up into Washington State toward Spokane. Wish us luck!
I am a bit nervous--somehow the idea of riding my bicycle across country wasn't as daunting from our living room in Colorado! Riding with all our bags packed on the bikes will very likely be quite a challenge! We'll let you know how it goes...
Let the fun begin (or continue)! Wish us luck!

Hi David & Traci!
Wishing I was up there with you instead of chained to my desk.
Since you asked, here are some links to very good info from the Marin County Bicycle Coalition for cyclists and drivers to get along safely out there on the road:

(note that I put hard returns in the URLs after Campaigns/ because they didn't appear to be wrapping around properly in the blog preview, so you'll have cut and paste in two swipes)
And here's an update on the criminal trial of Beverly Oaks, the driver who hit my father:
The San Mateo County DA just called yesterday to tell me that Beverly Oaks entered a guilty plea today. Her sentence will be 30 days in jail and 1.5 years of probation and license suspension during probation. The court can only order license suspension during probation, not longer. Permanent revocation is up to the DMV. Interestingly, she would have been given 3 years of probation with license suspension and no jail time, but she requested that the judge give her the 30 days of jail time in trade for a shorter probation and correspondingly shorter license suspension. The DA was surprised by this because at the end of her probation, before she gets her license back, the DMV will review her file, and he thinks that the chances that the DMV will permanently revoke her license at that time are quite good given her admission of negligence with the guilty plea, so she could well end up doing 30 days in jail without being able to take advantage of the shorter court-mandated license suspension that she bargained for. He says that he has seen the DMV revoke licenses for lesser crimes. He’s having a note put into her file so that at the end of the 1.5 year suspension they will call him, so we may someday learn the final outcome.
The beginning of Tom's ride is auspicious timiing for an end to the criminal trial. Thanks you so much for doing this. Have a fantastic ride. All of our hearts are with you!

We made is back safely from Costa Rica and Cocos Island. The diving at Cocos was exceptional (yes, the videos are true - you dive with hundreds of sharks at a time) and touring the rain forest, volcano and white water rafting on the mainland was great. The knee held up fine - the diving was great therapy.
I hope your ankle and knees are doing ok. We are thinking about you and can't wait for your next update.
Love, Nonie and Mike
